The Rotary Club of Hamburg held its annual Passing of the Gavel ceremony a few weeks early this year. Because the Rotary year begins each July 1, the one-year term of office begins around that time each year, with a ceremonial gavel handed off from the exiting president to the one about to step up to the plate. Because Brandi Reed joined the Air Force Reserves, taking off for Texas on May 28, the ceremony to swear in new President Lisa Avery was moved up. From left are President Lisa Avery, immediate Past President Brandi Reed and Rotarian John Nowak, who assisted with the oath of office. Following eight weeks of basic training, Reed will return to the Hamburg club and her position at Lakeside Funeral Home. Avery is employed by Howard Hanna Real Estate in the Hamburg office. The Rotary Club of Hamburg was founded 77 years ago and coordinates Warm the Children, provides college scholarships to Hamburg and Frontier high school students and is one of the four service organizations that coordinates the Burger Fest each July. The Rotary Club meets Tuesday evenings at 6 p.m. at JP Fitzgerald’s Restaurant in the Village of Hamburg.
